Coat of arms and flag

As of 1967, Garching has borne a coat of arms. In the upper half, it shows a red cartwheel with eight spokes, flanked by two green stylised pines in the center against a silver background. They symbolize the historic post office of Garching, but are also regarded as symbols for St. Katherine, the patron of the old church, and for the wide-open woodlands in the barren heathland of Garching’s gravel plain. In the lower half, the coat of arms shows in a stylized form the first German atomic research reactor, the seed of Garching’s municipal district “Forschungsinstitute” (research institutes).

The colors of the coat of arms also determine the colors in the flag that Garching has borne since being granted the privileges of a town. Arranged in longitudinal stripes, the colors are green, white and red. The official flag of the town shows the coat of arms in the upper third.
