Max Planck Institutes

Max Planck Institutes do fundamental research for the collective good in natural sciences, biomedical sciences, in humanities and social sciences. The Max Planck Society primarily takes up new, highly innovative lines of research that have not yet been established or not yet adequately established at Germany’s universities which do not fit into the organizational structure of universities due to their interdisciplinary character, or which require a lot of personnel or equipment that universities are unable to provide. With their multitude of subjects regarding natural sciences and humanities, the Max Planck Institutes complement the work done by universities and other research institutions in important areas of research; they work as leaders in some fields, and have a supplementary function in others. In addition, several institutes of the Max Planck Society also have a service function for university research. They provide complex equipment and installations to a wide circle of scientists ranging from telescopes and other instruments to specialist libraries and documentary reports.
